POOLER!!

Just off 95 is a bustling town doubling it's population in 6 years. The town of Pooler was once a vast area of farm land. Now is a retail and dining playground......oh....that being said there's a HUGE sports park by the YMCA.

One of my favorite things about Pooler is the access to all the things I love from a reasonable location.

I'm an hour from Tybee, hour and a half from Hilton Head, 25 minutes from City Market and down town. 6 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes from a grocery store, walking distance to 40 restaurants and maybe a hundred other retail shops and services.

I rode my skateboard to my eye appointment.

EVERYthing is so close, it's a common relocation spot for us yankee immigrants.

Polks Produce and Garden Center

LOOK at those tomatoes!!!……tomatos???2maytoes? Look at the red sliceable sandwhich fruit!

POLKS Produce and Garden Center is such a convenient location. Right on 80.

I stopped to have a look at some plants for my garden rehab project.

I was blown away at how healthy all the plants were. And the fact that they had SO many to choose from. A good amount of those hard to find plants were there too. And not last years leftovers that looked worked over. These plants are very healthy, blooming, growing, green well watered.

I put them in a group, and my helper for the day gave me a piece of paper for the checkout clerk.

Thompson and Thompson

I had some electrical issues after the storm. A transformer blew and we lost power. It cycled a few times a few days later and came back on. But I had some challenges with a few appliances.

I see these trucks everywhere. So I called em. This awesome dude, Andrew shows up on a Friday late afternoon and starts gettin into it.

Andrew knew exactly how to trouble shoot it, and came up with a solution.

It had some unusual challenges, requiring new parts, so he finished it up on a Monday and all is good.

Considering this was right after Helene, I feel like this was an amazingly quick response (same day).

I’d use these guys again. Good work, fair price, GREAT people.

These guys are great! You pay when you drop off, so when you pick it up, it’s just grab it and go.

I’ve never had railroad tracks on my pants or shirt sleeves. They are excellent with suits and sweaters alike. I’ve been using Pooler’s Best for 8 years and never once disappointed.

You get a text message when your items are ready. Pooler’s Best Drycleaners is easily accessed off Pooler Parkway.

Arrow Auto Glass

Arrow Auto Glass is recommended by State Farm, GEICO, and Farmers as their # 1 choice of glass repair vendors.

Arrow Auto Glass came right to my house and did the repair in my driveway.

They also coordinated the tech that handles the calibration of the sensors co located behind the rear view mirror.

This car is the nicest thing I’ve ever bought myself. And I couldn’t even tell they had been in it.

There are so many options when it comes to glass repair. This crew was like a NASCAR pit crew in my driveway. They’d done this a million times. It was so evident in their process.

I’m confident that if you choose Arrow Auto Glass, you will be very pleased.

Tell them Jeff from MAHI Outfitters sent you.

Mavis Tires and Brakes

This place rescued a buddy of mines race trip. He was heading down to Florida all the way from Massachusetts and was experiencing an unusual noise in his trucks front end.

I called Mavis and set up an appt for him. When we arrived there were a few people ahead of us still.

Eventually we got a tech to come out and have a look. The front left strut was on its way out. But was still safe to drive.

We got it replaced later that day and we’re on our way. Grateful for the diagnosis as it kept the show on the road.

My good friend made it to his race in plenty of time. He came in 11th out of 54 Sunfish.

Who says boats don’t need tire shops!? ;)

Check out Mavis Tires and Brakes.

Pooler Cinemas GTX

(912)330-0012

My favorite theater so far .

Pooler Cinemas is the best movie theater I’ve ever been to. The owners of this theater, seem to be lovers of theater itself.

They pay tribute to the classics every week. It’s a community theatre with the LARGEST SEATS. Foot rests and reclining.

The geometry for viewing is perfect. The shallower angle of the stadium seating makes footing easier entering and exiting. The ratio of seat distance to screen size is perfection.

Row designation is more clearly marked and there’s giant space for your snacks.

I recently saw Civil War and Monkey Man. Civil war is tough to watch. The acting, cinematography and sound effects were VERY realistic. Excellent movie with Kirsten Dunst leading the cast.

Dev Patel! Holy cow man. Sleeping Giant! Monkey Man was VERY cool. Pretty grotesque for younger viewers, but war is grotesque.

I actually like Pooler Cinemas best.

They have HUGE discounts for seniors and veterans. And they have good matinee discounts.

Within a mile, there are plenty of restaurants for whatever pleases your palate.

Royal Cinemas

and The World's Tallest IMAX

What's not to like about your favorite movie on a 100' wide screen that's 75' tall. The surround sound completely immerses you in the movie.

They serve pizza and hot dogs if you go to the dinner theater. There's a full menu. Beer and all.

Often they have special deals. They're advertising $6 movie Tuesdays right now. Not IMAX, but all the others.

Whistle Express Car Wash

(912)450-0897

Ok...maybe not the first thing on your list when you move to a new town. But this place is located where all the other stuff you need is. And here's the dealio.....it's the best car wash I've ever used....and I've used a lot on this planet.

You won't be here long before you realize that pollen and rain and road construction and dump truck dust give you a reason for frequent trips to the car wash.

Whistle Express can get the whole car clean....they clean those hard to reach back windows of goop from birds and bugs.

TOP THREE LIKES about Whistle Express Car Wash:

Air Dry

Automatic complete Armorall

And FREE Vacuum use with a car wash

D.A.M. Fine Cigars

Owner and CEO Darrell Boyette

Right off Pooler Parkway is another great CIGAR shop. I say CIGAR shop, because this is a specialty. A Cigar is to the tobacco business like fine wines are to the liquor business. A connoisseur is always available to help match your taste and budget to the proper stogey.

I'm a big fan of what I used to call Bogey Stogies.....a box of mixed or same cigars to puff on while you're playing. This is a great place for that.

I tried a Crux. I don't remember the name, but it was the tan one. (There's a whole color coded line of these). Honestly I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them....because of how they're stored.

Here's the thing about a cigar for me. Slow and EVEN burn, clean uninterrupted draw, and a great aroma and flavor. I'm not one to smoke half of it then smoke the other half another day....once it's lit you have to finish. Smoking half a D.A.M. Fine Cigar is like drinking half a beer.....and finishing it later. Ya just don't do it.....

D.A.M. Fine Cigars are kept in a GIANT humidor. The tobacco burns perfectly when it's al dente. You'll find quality tobacco sellers do this with their cigars. And there is a WORLD of difference.

If you need a box of cigars in the Pooler area, you will not be disappointed. There's a Deck attached to the building where you can sit out and have your stogey under the shelter of a HUGE awning and free Wi-Fi.

Three Trees Coffee at the Porch

If you find yourself traveling East on 80, just across from the Pooler Town Hall and Police Station is, "Three Tree Coffee." A home town coffee shop and local favorite.

Great for a quick coffee and breakfast sandwhich or a smooth frothy latte and a slice of quiche.

I absolutely LOVE the floor plan. There's some common space with a couple of bars. There are also three or four separate rooms, so you can branch out into your own quiet corner of this caffeine condo.

Their website says they're the oldest building in Pooler. And it's very well preserved. You'll love the feel of the wood floors and sound of up beat music.

One thing I love about the way they preserved this building is the wavy glass in the windows. An old mutt like myself remembers these types of windows from my grandparents house. It's very very inviting. I adored this whole experience.

WiFi is complimentary and power outlets are plentiful. There is quite a lot of parking available.

Vision Works

(912)330-8884

It Does Now......

90% of what you learn is through your eyes. I get my eyes checked once a year. Body and brain all have to be working together to do your job and your recreational activities. And the eyes send extremely important information to the brain.

There used to be a DC 10 subsidized by many of the worlds wealthy. It flew around the world performing eye surgery in underdeveloped countries. Not sure what it is now. I think they upgraded to a 787.

Recently I lost my eye glasses. Not optimal as my job requires a complicated combination of prescription. We look through devices requiring multiple focal points and lengths while traveling at high speeds in a transition from sky to earth with.....well.....you in the back of an airplane. I just do it in simulators, but the requirement for glasses is still the same.

We want our glasses to be the *very* best.

Vision Works in Pooler has been guiding me through my cornucopia of cornea changes. And they are excellent at finding the right frames and multi performance lense for what you do.

This past visit was with Iris for my initial eye health checks. Dr. Desai was my optometrist and Lisa helped me pick out my frames and lense options.

I went with Nike again. Columbia has a similar design at the same price. They're light weight, flexible plastic, and the nose feet are molded into the frame.

I like that for 3 reasons:

1. I'm really tough on glasses. Sit on them, drop them, and stretch them over my hats sometimes. Plastic has a "memory". When you bend it, it goes back to it's original shape. Metal gets bent.

2. The molded nose bridge rests right on your nose. This design distributes the weight along every surface the bridge contacts. Seems like a minor design difference, but it's a world of difference at the end of a 16hr day.

3. The plastic molded nose pads blended directly into the frame do not bend. With bendable metal nose pads, there are infinite shapes for them to take. Therefore if they get bent, your glasses no longer rest on your face properly. Combine that with metal frames, and you could have all sorts of challenges. Add metal temples and it complicates fitment even more, like it or not.

However....the metal frame glasses can't be beat for that formal wear that can accept nothing less than the statement of the mechanical engineering that goes into metal frame eye glasses with adjustable nose pads. They are a gentlemen's accessory for those special occasions that scream scholar.

I own a pair of each; metal and plastic framed glasses.

When it comes to your vision, trust the best. Trust Vision Works.

The Ice Cream Stop

(912)450-1049

Well this is a tough one. Where to get ice cream in Pooler. There are so FEW places.

Well The Ice Cream Stop is the cure to your sugar fix! A quick easy detour to treat the kids or yourselves after a run to the the new Generator Shop. If you're at Mavis getting your tires or brakes done, mosey on over for a frozen bowl of your favorite flavor.

This dessert delicatessen is an OAK in a forest of pines. Nothing against other ice cream places. But many have gone “chain” or drive thru.

Ice Cream Stop has Sundaes served in a GLASS bowl!!!

Come on! What heaven is this!?

Doctors recommend a well balanced diet, so make sure you have one in each hand....over 2 scoops gets heavy. :)
